You wake up in the morning and immediately brush your teeth because morning breath turns people away. However, some people battle with that bad breath all day, and it is known as halitosis. This condition will not only turn people away; it can also be a sign of further medical problems. If you have had your physician clear you for a sinus infection or tonsillitis, there are a few ways to get rid of the terrible smell.

Good Dental Hygiene

Bad breath is often caused by bacteria that are growing in your mouth. Brushing your teeth does not only freshen your mouth, it also washes away the bacteria. You want to make sure when you brush your teeth you are using a soft bristle brush to scrub the plaque and debris off your teeth and gums gently. Your gums and tongue are often neglected when it comes to brushing, which can lead to gum disease. The tongue is an organ that can become a sponge for bacteria.

After you have brushed your teeth, you will want to take a few minutes and floss. Flossing takes a small string between your gums and removes any plaque that may have been missed during a routine brushing. They can also check to make sure you do not have any infections beginning to fester and treat them before they spread.

Your Diet is Important

Onions and garlic are two types of food that will cause bad breath. Unfortunately, you can only mask it until the chemicals are broken down, as it is coming from your lungs and not your mouth. If you are planning to be around others, skip foods that produce chemicals that alter the way your breath smells.

In addition, make sure you do not skip meals and stay hydrated. Eating food helps increase saliva, which helps to wash your mouth out. Just the same, if you are not properly hydrated, your saliva glands will not be able to produce enough to combat dry mouth. If you are in a situation where you are unable to eat or drink, chewing gum or sucking on a lozenge will help stimulate the saliva glands.

Stop Smoking

Finally, if you are currently a smoker, you need to work to quit. Smoking assists in the accumulation of plaque and tartar. Chewing tobacco can cause gum disease, which will create bad breath. If you are struggling with smoking and wish to stop, talk to your physician about assistance.
